Newport District Scouts Water Activities Team
Drascombe Lugger sailing for Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts
Dinghy sailing for Scouts and Explorer Scouts
Powerboating for Explorer Scouts

The Drascombe Lugger is a keelboat and offers a fun and dry sailing experience for 5 scouts or 3 adults comfortably.
Sailing a Lugger is a great introduction to sailing as there is a qualified instructor on board who can teach you basic sailing skills in a comfortable environment with little risk of getting wet.
A typical session will last 2 hours and will include a safety talk, kitting up, some sailing theory and time on the water, including games.
The emphasis is on teamwork and enjoyment, with every scout playing an important role in sailing the boat
Participants should be over 8, over 30kg and comfortable around water. We can only take one non-swimmer per boat.
A group can book one or two Luggers with up to 5 Cubs/Scouts or 4 Explorer Scouts and a leader on each boat.
To help us cover our costs we would appreciate a contribution of £30 per boat booked.
Dress for the weather, but usually joggers, old trainers, fleece and cagoule will be fine. We will provide buoyancy aids.
Ideal for groups to book for their cubs, scouts or explorers on a normal session night. Wednesday, Thursday and some Friday evenings from 5:45pm-7:45pm from May to July. Further details will be supplied when booking.
The Topper is the perfect starter dinghy for scouts and our RS Fevas are exciting lightweight dinghies ideal for two scouts or explorer scouts to sail. The boats we use in a session will depend on the experience of the group and weather conditions.
Dinghy sailing is more challenging than Lugger sailing so we prefer participants to have experienced Lugger sailing or tried dinghy sailing beforehand so that they know what to expect.
Scouts should be over 10½, over 40kg and be able to swim 50m and be comfortable in water. There’s a chance of capsizing so scouts could get wet and will be taught how to right the boat and carry on sailing. Participants should wear a wetsuit and suitable footwear. Bring your own if you have them, otherwise we have a limited stock of wet-suits and shoes in the most common sizes. If in doubt please ask.
We can currently take 10 Scouts / Explorers per session, contact us if you have a larger group. A contribution of £15 per person per day towards our annual running costs is appreciated.
Dinghy sessions and 2-day courses usually run on Saturdays and during holidays. These include a mixture of sailing theory and time on the water. The emphasis is on developing individual sailing knowledge and introducing scouts to the RYA training scheme, through which they can progress to become good sailors.
We like to encourage keen sailors to return for further coaching and to develop their sailing skills as far as they can. There are also opportunities to help run scout sailing sessions and ultimately become sailing instructors.
We are pleased to offer Explorer Scouts the chance to learn to drive Moby, our safety boat, under the guidance of our RYA Powerboat Instructors. Explorers will be taught boat handling skills in confined spaces and at speed with an emphasis on safety and risk awareness.
We can take groups of 2 or 3 at a time and the sessions will last about 2 - 3 hours.
We can take bookings from individuals or groups. A contribution of £15 per session would be appreciated to help cover our annual running costs.
